Sticker Equates Illegal Immigrants to Wild Game

Offensive stickers resembling hunting permits were being sold in a Colorado-based convenience store chain, Agfinity. KUSA-TV reported on the controversy this past week. The store claimed the stickers were removed from their stores, but reporters found that wasn’t true. On top of that, only after receiving a bombardment of complaints did Agfinity issue an insincere apology on its Facebook page, “We at Agfinity deeply regret the concern this issue related to bumper stickers that had been for sale in our store has raised in our community. We have removed the bumper sticker display from our stores. As an organization, we do not condone offensive messages of this nature.”

First of all, “illegal immigrant”, here, means Mexican immigrants. As a country, we’ve built walls and have armed guards protecting our “borders”. And, by borders, we mean the Mexican-U.S. border. There are no walls, no guns and no border patrol on our northern border with Canada. No one is “hunting” Canadian immigrants, Asian immigrants or European immigrants. In Anzaldua’s Borderlands, she says, “Borders are set up to define the places that are safe and unsafe, to distinguish us from them. Gringos in the U.S. Southwest consider the inhabitants of the borderlands transgressors, aliens—whether they possess documents or not” (p. 25).

Second, in addition to the blatant racism of these “hunting permits” directed most assuredly at Mexican immigrants, the idea that they encourage the idea that we as “Americans” should be hunting and killing illegal immigrants is utterly disturbing. The permit reads, “No bag limit—Tagging not required.” This “permit” that seems to be one big “joke” practically encourages modern day lynching, only this time the targets are illegal immigrants. Anzaldua is right when she describes borderlands as a landscape filled with “hatred, anger and exploitation” (preface). This sticker spurs on deep-rooted hatred and fear of illegal immigrants. It gives the U.S. a much need scapegoat for all of our economic, social and political hardships.

This “joke” proves how important immigration reform is to our country. It is vital in shaping our relations with other countries and even relations within our own country. I’m afraid one issue that won’t be addressed, however, with immigration reform is racism toward “terrorists”. And, by “terrorists”, we mean anyone who looks Middle Eastern. Is there a never-ending cycle of scapegoats for our country?

  1. It's hard for me to even imagine the fact that these were actually being sold in stores; it's so horribly offensive, especially in an area with a large Latino population. My sister works for an immigrant rights organization in Aurora and I've become extremely aware of various issues surrounding the immigrant population around this area. Even the term "illegal" has negative connotations in and of itself.

Undocumented immigrants are real people - not wild animals like this bumper sticker seems to suggest. It amazes me (in an awful way) that someone would come up with this idea in the first place and think it was funny. This past summer, I met a few of the students who were walking across the U.S. to campaign for the DREAM act. They stopped in Kansas and stayed at our house one night on their way to D.C. A few of them were undocumented, but their mentality was "undocumented and unafraid" and they were truly an amazing group of people. I can't imagine being in their shoes, walking across the country for immigrant rights, and seeing this bumper sticker on someone's car. I really hope it's not being sold anywhere else.

  2. I think that a lot of people who protest against illegal immigrants forget that that unless they are of Native American descent, indeed their ancestors likely immigrated here illegally. I came across this video where an upset Native American man tells them just that:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/06/native-american-man-immigration-protesters_n_2630577.html

A striking part of the article is the response from the protesters to the man:

"The protestors mostly ignored the man though some responded by informing him that they too were of Native American descent, and yet others simply suggested he'd had too much to drink."

The protesters are perpetuating stereotypes of Native Americans (perhaps in an attempt to invalidate his points?) without addressing the true matter of fact that his argument has a lot of truth to it. People who protest illegal immigration need to take word from President Obama that, “unless you’re one of the first Americans, Native Americans, you came from somewhere else – somebody brought you."

  3. I will call it like it is. We have been invaded by illegals who come to America have many babies and allowed to steal our resources like welfare food stamps medical care. Our citizens are forced to support non citizens who abuse this country and our $$. They bring with them disease, bed bugs and trash. Many diseases that were extinct are now back. TB, polio, whooping cough etc. They average 5 kids on our dime. Homelessness because of foreclosures and lack of jobs are the norm. It's not getting any better. Felon laws prohibit the hiring and renting of illegals yet because of shady democrat legislators who rely on the votes of illegals and the support of the Hispanic communities so they ignore the laws. Does anyone know a family who has lost everything? Its heartbreaking to see so many homeless families. Stop all funding and jobs to illegals. Many diseases are coming back like tb, polio and the bed bug issue is pathetic and costly.
