Need for Jihad to Maintain an On-Line Presence

http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2013/03/digital-jihad-inside-al-qaedas-social-networks/273761/

I was reading over this article about the message boards and on-line presence of Al-Queda wondering why and/or how can they still be operating and using the internet to share information and plans if it's so accessible for the US governments to find and monitor it?

It certainly does make you think of how easily accessible we are then for others to search us and know our plans if we invest heavily into an internet presence. So, should we? I don't have much to hide in my life and I feel completely comfortable with what is on my accounts. I don't think I've ever even looked into privacy options, why should I? But I will admit that I often think of how a photo or a statement could be used against me or for me if posted on the internet.

As we explore traditional media and social media with communication, I'm starting to realize just how serious it is in terms of our communication and relationships. Until I started the IIC program, I thought Facebook, online forums, Instigram etc. were just silly entertainment outlets we had and they'd soon be over. But the more we explore them and use them in class, the more I realize how seriously I need to consider their potential. I think its powerful and unbelievable that our lives can be invaded so easily without us knowing. That the government, or anyone for that matter, can hack into our accounts and gain understandings of our day to day. So where does the line need to be drawn?

Kristina and I spoke for our class discussion on the upside of social media - how it shares good stories, ideas, etc. and is a positive. So how then do we consider the use of social media and the internet for gaining information into international situations. In the article (Re)conceptualizing Intercultural Communication in a Networked Society the authors talk about creating new spaces through Digital Media for Intercultural Communication. I wonder if we should consider that digital media is not only enabling our ability to monitor terrorism but it's also allowing for expansion and collaboration of terroristic threats?  Its also interesting to understand that very powerful individuals use the same sites and outlets for their plans that I use to post photos for my parents.. So what can we gain from these online communities and conversations and how much should we invest and take them seriously? I'm curious to understand better as I gain a better understanding of the seriousness facebook, blogs, forums, and other social media sites play into our lives and communication.
